Stand by for Google Chips

Not Google’s next update, just the search engine giant’s move into chip design

The wrong kind of Google chips.

Custom chips: ‘user-definable’ with salt and vinegar. (No! Not them sort of chips, Google chips are of the silicon variety – Ed).

In the last three years, there has been speculation over Google’s entry into chip design. This week, according to Wired Magazine, could become reality. The World’s Favourite Search Engine has been in talks with Qualcomm.

Where were you in 2008?  Back then we had a global financial downturn; responsive web design was years away; Take That were popular again; and Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 was still the browser of choice for many households and businesses.  On the 02 September 2008, in Mountain View, Google released its very first web browser.  Entitled Chrome, the browser’s stripped down approach and support for the latest coding standards won friends with all users.  Not only households and businesses, also coders and web developers.

Mobile-friendly update – What has changed?

Google are now ranking mobile-friendly pages higher on mobile search results with the new mobile-friendly update.

Why have Google done this?

Google have done this so that high-quality and more relevant results where text is readable can be found without tapping or zooming, tap targets are spaced appropriately, and the page avoids unplayable content or horizontal scrolling.

Mobile Friendly Update

What does this update Affect?

  • Affects only search rankings on mobile devices
  • Affects search results in all languages globally
  • Applies to individual pages, not entire websites

Will this effect your rankings?

The mobile-friendly change is very important, but Google are not just ranking purely on this. Google are still ranking in other ways. The intent of the search query is still a very strong signal. Even if a page with high quality content is not mobile-friendly, it could still rank highly if it has great content.

How to check if your site is mobile friendly

Google have provided a few great Tool you can use to check if your website is mobile friendly. It examines individual pages and is called the Mobile-Friendly Test or you can even use the Mobile Usability report in Webmaster Tools to check your entire site.

If your site’s pages are not mobile-friendly, not only are you putting competitors ahead of you, but you may see a large decrease in mobile traffic from Google Search. But don’t worry, once your site is mobile friendly, Google will automatically crawl and index your pages and reprocess them. You can also use Fetch as Google with Submit to Index, to speed up the process and then Google will crawl your site and your pages can be treated as mobile-friendly in ranking.

SEO and Why it Should be Used – (Infographic)

Here at Manchester SEO Company we have built an infographic for you guys and it outlines why SEO is substantial to your business.

Take a look:

You can share this infographic on your website or blog using the code below:

The Power of Infographics

Infographics are a new technique which webmasters use to build links and authority. Google seems to love it as it is a way of sharing content in a more appealing way to the users. This causes them to engage more which is a factor with Google.

What is an infographic?

I’m no Einstein but “Info-Graphic” what do you think it is? When I put it like that I bet you are face-palming? Well basically it is a graphic image with valuable information on there such as interesting statistics and graphs. Here is an example;

Infographic about Laptop Tech History

As you can see this is about a computer based business and they have focused on an interesting title. Look at the information and the images relating to it, it takes a lot of time and effort but it delivers the information to people in an attractive manner.

It is a proven fact that people who see a load of text are more likely to scan it whereas infographics are designed with images and likeable material to keep people interested.

So in summary an infographic attracts users to your website and the data on there will keep them on there which will reduce the bounce rate and show Google that the content on your site is appealing to your audience.

What SEO benefits will we gain?

link building new

This has to be the most common question I get asked when talking about infographics. They are a great way of building links, if somebody likes the look of it and it relates to them then they are going to use it on there website (natural link building). The way you get a link back is that the embed code will be embedded onto the page they have used your infographic.

It is not just building links where you can benefit from this method but also it can gain you a lot of traffic. People love images and if people love them then so does Google. You can post your infographic on image based sites such as Pinterest and aswell as your social media platforms.

Reddit is also a great way to drive a load of traffic just post the link into the infographic subreddit.

What Techniques Should We Consider for SEO in 2014?

With the way Google has altered their search algorithm in 2013 sharing valuable content and engaging in conversation with your target audience is going to be a huge factor this new year.

Social media has always been an aspect to increasing visibility on the internet, this is mainly due to it’s extremely huge popularity with internet users. But what I am finding more effective is not just sharing content from your website across your social media platforms but actually discussing with your viewers exactly what they want to know.

The Google is evolving engaging with helpful content is becoming vastly superior to optimising content. Content optimisation was a huge think before the recent updates. I am not saying do not optimise your content because content is the most crucial thing, I am saying optimise it wisely and not to make it spammy!

social media engagement

What this means is do not stuff the content with keywords and links to spammy websites, make the content enjoyable and easy to read for the target audience. Include a bit of friendly humour (everybody loves a bit of humour), funny images, meme’s etc. If you provide this kind of content and share it correctly, the results will astonish you.

The way to share this content is to search for discussions, forums Q&A sites which are relevant to the content you wish to share. For example if your content is about putting up a kitchen shelf, then you would look at DIY forums.

So it is good to have a number of quality links, great onsite optimisation and content but you will not see the full benefit of the hard work you have put in if you do not engage in social discussions. It shows Google that your website is constantly active (creating a buzz or pulse) and delivering useful content to their users which is all that they want.

Doing all of this on a regular basis should increase traffic steadily and most importantly naturally. Link building is still and important factor to some extent but ask yourself this question, when has Google ever penalised a social networking platform?

There are no rules by Google which say you cannot be to social infact it is completely the opposite they want you to be socially active as much as possible.

Should Google be Worried? Are Other Marketing Options on the Horizon?

Googlebot, blind to the notion of marketing options from other search engines? If you’re an online marketer or even if you are just starting your business or career in the world of SEO, no doubt you are always pandering to the tune of Google. After all, Google is the alpha male when it comes to the ownership of the market with an estimated 67% of the overall market share of search engine searches.

So have Google got it sewn up? Is jumping when Google asks you to jump always be the case? Should it be?

In other words should all your efforts for marketing when it comes to online presence solely be focused on Google, how it ranks its site to tap into their traffic source?

Well, there are a couple of different ways of thinking about this really.

In the first instance no, you should never throw all your eggs in one basket. If you’re new to the world of SEO, then take our word for it when we say that Google is a very temperamental beast. You can literally spend months doing what Google wants to get your website ranked on the first page, and when you get there only to find they have changed the rules (changed the algorithm) and what you’ve spent months doing previously is now actually seen as being harmful to your website.

The problem with concentrating your efforts to please Google is Google itself. You are at the mercy of how they want their search engine to rank things. What works one day may not work the next.

So with this in mind its a good idea to diversify your efforts. Look at other ways to bring in your traffic, if Google didn’t exist, what would you do?

Alternative Options you may want to consider for marketing:

  • PPC – Cost per Click
  • Media Buys
  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Email Marketing

These on their own, certainly combined could potentially bring you the same traffic, if not more, than what Google would.

Now the second way of thinking when it come to Google is this, do you think that Google maybe top forever? Some may say yes definitely, now although there is still a strong possibility of that, if I was Google I wouldn’t be so complacent.

With all these algorithm changes of late, has it crossed your mind why they have done this?

Maybe it’s because they want to improve their results and user experience.

However, it also maybe because they feel they gap is shortening from other competition from the likes of MSN who combined with Yahoo so they are having to revamp the way they do things.

Then there’s additional competition coming in from China and other search engines.

If you thin about it, Google is mainly just a field where you put a keyword in.

However with the likes of Bing etc they offer this also but can provide you with news and other features from their home page. Also, they too are working on their algorithms, and who’s to say they may not come up with better ways to rank and locate website when your search.

Bing and Yahoo always have big budgets to invest, so anything is possible.

Over the next few years, it’s going to be interesting how things hot up in the competition world and do you know something, I think a bit of extra competition when it comes to search engines won’t be a bad thing at all.

Reasons Why Online Businesses need SEO Companies

SEO companiesA wide range of companies now have an online presence and there are in fact businesses that operate solely online. This is a great way to operate for both start ups and smaller and more local businesses as it can save a lot of money. Not only do you need less space to operate in such as no shop to rent as well as storage as you sell online. This saves on rent as well as business rates and utilities.

It also means you can cut back on staff spend as well as you don’t need someone available to tend to every customer and process payments. It can be carried out automatically via card payments or transfer systems like PayPal.

Online businesses need to focus a lot more on their online presence and visibility because if people don’t find them online they won’t find them at all. There’s no shop to walk past to pull them in. This means that some of the money that they save on rent, bills and staff needs to redirected to ensuring that people are finding them online, which is why an SEO company can be so essential to an online business.

Search engines are a popular way of looking for a web-based business or service with keywords and phrases relevant to what you are looking for, such as ‘online marketing Manchester.’ You need to make sure that when people are looking for a business such as yours in your area, your website is the first that they see, as the one on the top of the list is often the one that they click on first. Search engines such as Google are selective on how they choose who goes at the top; they have complex algorithms to determine the most relevant and best quality. Because of the complex nature and the fast pace at which these change, a professional SEO company is a must.

SEO, or search engine optimisation, is the process of making your website as attractive as possible to search engines in addition to potential customers, to get a higher listing and a better presence. This is as complex a process as the algorithms themselves. There are some things you can do yourself like making sure that the content is well written with good spelling and grammar, but a professional SEO company can do the rest for you; building quality links, updating content with keyword rich content and ensure that social media is creating ‘social signals’ showing search engines yours is an active business.

By all means there are books on SEO and you can try doing it yourself, but to achieve a good quality and consistent online presence and enough traffic to your site, you should use a professional SEO company to ensure you are an online success.
